H.R. No. 1053
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Curtis King of The Black Academy of Arts and Letters
in Dallas has been selected for a 2025 Honorable Mention by the Tony
Awards Excellence in Theatre Education jury; and
WHEREAS, This national accolade recognizes K-12 educators
who have made a monumental impact in the lives of students while
upholding the highest standards of the profession; among the judges
for this category are representatives of the American Theatre Wing,
the Broadway League, and Carnegie Mellon University; Mr. King and
The Black Academy of Arts and Letters will be featured in the Tony
Awards Playbill and on the Tony Awards website; and
WHEREAS, The president of The Black Academy of Arts and
Letters, Mr. King established the school in 1977; over the years,
its youth programs have benefited countless talented young artists
from the area, including acclaimed actor Regina Taylor, as well as
singer-songwriter Erykah Badu and musician Roy Hargrove; Mr. King
previously received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the
National Association of Dramatic and Speech Arts, along with a host
of other honors; and
WHEREAS, Curtis King has demonstrated an enduring commitment
to the American theater and to arts education, and he may indeed
take pride in this noteworthy acknowledgment; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas
Legislature hereby congratulate Curtis King on his receipt of a
2025 Honorable Mention from the Tony Awards Excellence in Theatre
Education program and extend to him sincere best wishes for the
future; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Mr. King as an expression of high regard by the Texas
House of Representatives.
