H.R. No. 1069

R E S O L U T I O N

WHEREAS, Senior Captain Edward Escamilla and firefighters

Jonathan Guzman and Darren Jones of the Houston Fire Department

demonstrated great bravery in the line of duty when they responded

to an apartment fire on January 7, 2025; and

WHEREAS, The two-alarm fire broke out at an apartment complex

in southeast Houston at approximately 5:30 a.m. and quickly spread,

consuming two units and prompting an urgent evacuation; after

arriving at the scene, the three firefighters entered the building

to check if anyone was still inside; during their search, they

became trapped by a heavy door, and they issued a distress call for

rescue; and

WHEREAS, As their gear melted due to the extreme heat, the

team sustained severe burns to their hands, legs, and necks;

another firefighter subsequently ripped the door open and helped

them get to safety; following weeks of extensive treatment at

Memorial Hermann Hospital, all three of the firefighters were

eventually discharged from its burn unit; and

WHEREAS, Every day, firefighters are called upon to put

themselves in harm's way to come to the aid of their fellow

citizens, and through their valiant actions, these heroic Texans

have distinguished themselves as exemplary members of their

profession; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas

Legislature hereby commend Senior Captain Edward Escamilla and

firefighters Jonathan Guzman and Darren Jones for their courageous

actions in responding to an apartment fire and extend to each of

them sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further

RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be

prepared for each firefighter as an expression of high regard by the

Texas House of Representatives.
