H.R. No. 1073
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, World Ovarian Cancer Day is being observed on May 8,
2025; and
WHEREAS, Ovarian cancer is the fifth leading cause of
cancer-related death in women in the United States, accounting for
more deaths than any other gynecologic cancer; a woman's risk of
being diagnosed with the disease during her lifetime is about 1 in
91; and
WHEREAS, The American Cancer Society estimates that nearly
21,000 cases of ovarian cancer will be diagnosed in 2025, and
approximately 12,700 individuals, including some 1,100 Texans,
will die from the disease; survival rates vary greatly depending on
the stage of diagnosis, and while the five-year survival rate is
approximately 50 percent, it is more than 90 percent when caught
early; and
WHEREAS, Currently, there is no reliable early detection test
for ovarian cancer; however, improved awareness of the symptoms,
which may include bloating, pelvic or abdominal pain, trouble
eating or feeling full quickly, and urinary issues, can lead to a
faster diagnosis and improved outcomes for women; and
WHEREAS, Ongoing investments in ovarian cancer research and
education are critical in the fight against this life-threatening
disease, and the observance of World Ovarian Cancer Day unites
people across the globe in their commitment to heightening
awareness of this serious health issue; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas
Legislature hereby recognize May 8, 2025, as World Ovarian Cancer
Day and urge all Texans to learn more about the disease.
