H.R. No. 1079

R E S O L U T I O N

WHEREAS, The City of Laredo is celebrating the 270th

anniversary of its founding on May 15, 2025; and

WHEREAS, Located on the banks of the Rio Grande, Laredo

traces its roots to 1755, when Tomás Sánchez de la Barrera y Garza

established the settlement and was appointed its captain and chief

justice; the town received a resident priest in 1760; as its

population grew steadily, the first public school was established;

it was named the capital of the Republic of the Rio Grande in 1840,

and it ultimately became part of Texas in 1846; two years later, it

was chosen as the Webb County seat; and

WHEREAS, From its earliest days, Laredo was an important hub

for trade, and the arrival of the railroad in the 1880s furthered

the city's development into an international gateway; its economy

was also supported by coal mining, onion farming, and the discovery

of oil and gas in the early 20th century; and

WHEREAS, Today, Laredo is home to more than 255,000 people,

and its leading industries include transportation and warehousing,

retail trade, and educational services; residents and visitors

alike enjoy such attractions as the San Agustín Plaza, the Republic

of the Rio Grande Museum, and the San Agustín Cathedral; in

addition, outdoor enthusiasts are drawn to the region for hiking,

birding, and other activities; and

WHEREAS, Celebrating their rich history as they work to build

an even brighter future, the people of Laredo are justifiably proud

of their community, and it is indeed fitting to honor their

contributions to the story of the Lone Star State; now, therefore,

be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas

Legislature hereby commemorate the 270th anniversary of the City of

Laredo and extend to its citizens sincere best wishes for the

future.
