H.R. No. 1152

R E S O L U T I O N

WHEREAS, The Ysleta del Sur Pueblo tribe has demonstrated an

unwavering commitment to the advancement of its people, culture,

and community; and

WHEREAS, One of three federally recognized Native American

tribes in the State of Texas, the YDSP descend from Tiguas who

relocated from modern-day New Mexico to the El Paso area in the 17th

century; they were industrious farmers, raising wheat, corn,

cattle, and horses, and helped build the Ysleta Mission; in 1682,

they established a government now considered the oldest in Texas;

and

WHEREAS, The YDSP today number more than 4,000 across the

nation; an active partner in the greater El Paso region, the Pueblo

owns and operates a variety of businesses that provide meaningful

employment and benefits for both tribal members and other area

residents; its government and diverse enterprises fund essential

infrastructure and services, including health care, education, law

enforcement, tribal courts, elder assistance, housing, and capital

improvements; in addition, the government is especially focused on

workforce training and job creation; and

WHEREAS, Valuing its autonomy, the YDSP incorporates

principles of wise self-governance in all its endeavors, from

service delivery and economic development to partnerships and

business connections; the Pueblo champions the rights and

prosperity of tribal members and works to maintain strong

relationships with neighboring communities; through collective

spirit and a variety of programs, it strengthens social cohesion

across the region while also preserving a rich heritage; and

WHEREAS, Current tribal officials include Cacique Jose

Sierra Sr., Governor E. Michael Silvas, Lieutenant Governor Adam

Torres, War Captain Omar Villanueva, Alguacil Raul Willie Almanzar

III, and Councilmen Rafael Gomez Jr., Raul Candelaria Jr., Andrew

Torrez, and Fabian Gomez; and

WHEREAS, Over the course of more than three centuries, the

Ysleta del Sur Pueblo tribe has played a key role in the evolution

of the El Paso region, and its efforts in behalf of progress for its

members continue to foster an environment where all area residents

can thrive; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas

Legislature hereby honor the Ysleta del Sur Pueblo for its

contributions and extend to the tribal members sincere best wishes

for the future; and, be it further

RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be

prepared for the tribe as an expression of high regard by the Texas

House of Representatives.
