R E S O L U T I O N

WHEREAS, A full and generous life drew to a close with the

passing of the Reverend Dr. Byrd Lacey Jr. of Houston on May 25,

2025, at the age of 92; and

WHEREAS, The son of Byrd Lacey Sr. and Elizabeth Swearengin

Lacey, Byrd Lacey was born in Chappell Hill on February 25, 1933,

and he grew up with the companionship of 11 siblings; he devoted

himself to his faith at an early age as a member of Providence

Baptist Church, and he later graduated from C. H. Hogan High School;

in 1958, he was ordained as a minister at Mount Carmel Missionary

Baptist Church, and he graduated from Union Baptist Theological

Seminary three years later; he went on to earn a doctorate in

divinity studies from the Inter-Baptist Theological Center in 1981;

and

WHEREAS, Reverend Lacey embarked on a distinguished 64-year

career in the ministry in 1960 and became pastor of McGee Chapel

Missionary Baptist Church in Houston; over the course of the

ensuing decades, he went on to lead the congregations of Pilgrim

Rest Missionary Baptist Church in Houston, West Tabernacle Baptist

Church in Conroe, and Friendship Missionary Baptist Church in

Huntsville; in October 1983, he became pastor of Greater Mount

Olive Missionary Baptist Church in Houston, where he served for

four decades until his retirement in March 2024; and

WHEREAS, Reverend Lacey shared a rewarding marriage of 54

years with his wife, Marilyn Lacey; he took great pride in his four

children, Cheryl Chandler, Kim Carter, Dr. Jackie Ward, and Cheryl

Lacey Donovan, and with the passing years, he had the pleasure of

seeing his treasured family grow to include 10 grandchildren and 9

great-grandchildren; and

WHEREAS, Deeply dedicated to his family, his faith, and his

community, Byrd Lacey earned the lasting respect and admiration of

all who were privileged to know him; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas

Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of the Reverend

Dr. Byrd Lacey Jr. and extend sincere condolences to all who mourn

his passing; and, be it further

RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be

prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of

Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Dr. Lacey.
