H.R. No. 379

R E S O L U T I O N

WHEREAS, Texas is fortunate to benefit from the efforts of

passionate and engaged residents such as Hargie Faye Savoy of Port

Arthur, whose history of civic involvement is an inspiration to all

who know her; and

WHEREAS, A devoted champion of civil rights, Mrs. Savoy

founded the Martin Luther King Jr. Support Group of Southeast Texas

in 1986 at the request of Coretta Scott King and has served as the

organization's president for three decades; each year, the group

sponsors a celebration and worship service promoting Dr. King's six

principles of nonviolence to help commemorate the Martin Luther

King Jr. Day holiday; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Savoy has further contributed to her community

as a board member for various organizations, including the CHRISTUS

St. Mary Hospital, the Art Museum of Southeast Texas, and the

Greater Port Arthur Chamber of Commerce; in recognition of her

work, she has received numerous accolades, among them the Life

Member Award from the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, the

Outstanding Texan Award from the Texas Legislative Black Caucus,

and the Freedom Award from the NAACP; and

WHEREAS, A lifelong resident of Port Arthur, Mrs. Savoy is a

graduate of Lincoln High School, and she has been a congregant of

Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist Church for more than a half century;

in all her endeavors, she enjoys the love and support of her

children, Jacquelyn, Madeline, Jewel, and Terry; and

WHEREAS, Hargie Faye Savoy has made a lasting, positive

difference through her vision, leadership, and tireless

dedication, and her accomplishments have earned the deep admiration

of her fellow citizens; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas

Legislature hereby honor Hargie Faye Savoy for her many years of

service to the Port Arthur community and extend to her sincere best

wishes for the future; and, be it further

RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be

prepared for Mrs. Savoy as an expression of high regard by the Texas

House of Representatives.
