H.R. No. 835

R E S O L U T I O N

WHEREAS, The celebration of The University of Texas at

Arlington Day at the State Capitol on April 17, 2025, provides a

fitting opportunity to recognize this notable institution; and

WHEREAS, UTA traces its history to 1895, when Arlington

College was established as a private school for area youth; the

campus was converted into Carlisle Military Academy in 1902 and was

subsequently known as Arlington Training School and then Arlington

Military Academy; in 1917, the 35th Texas Legislature created a new

junior college at the site, Grubbs Vocational College, which was a

branch of what is now The Texas A&M University System; the campus

eventually became North Texas Junior Agricultural College and later

Arlington State College, and in 1965, it was transferred to The

University of Texas System; it adopted its current name in 1967; and

WHEREAS, Today, UTA is the second-largest university in the

UT System, boasting an enrollment of more than 41,000 students and

offering over 180 baccalaureate, master's, and doctoral degree

programs; each year, the university and its alumni contribute

$28.8 billion in economic impact; and

WHEREAS, UTA encompasses nine colleges, which provide

courses in such critical fields as public health, elder care,

nursing, construction management, big data analytics, special

education, and engineering; in addition, the institution promotes

educational and workforce development at its Fort Worth Center and

its Research Institute; on April 3, 2025, it commemorated the

groundbreaking of its new UTA West campus; and

WHEREAS, A world-class research university, its projects

contributed $59 million to the national economy in 2024; UTA has

been ranked as the ninth fastest-growing doctoral public

institution in the United States, and it holds an R1 designation

from the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher

Education; the university has also been designated as a

Hispanic-Serving Institution as well as an Asian American and

Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution by the U.S.

Department of Education; and

WHEREAS, Over the past 130 years, The University of Texas at

Arlington has provided its students with a strong foundation for

achievement, and in so doing, it has played a significant role in

fostering economic development and enhancing the quality of life in

the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas

Legislature hereby recognize April 17, 2025, as The University of

Texas at Arlington Day at the State Capitol and extend to the

visiting delegation sincere best wishes for a meaningful and

memorable stay in Austin.
