H.R. No. 841
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The Southwest Independent School District Penguin
Project was honored with a 2025 Magna Silver Award at the National
School Boards Association annual conference, held April 4-6, 2025,
in Atlanta, Georgia; and
WHEREAS, Now in its third year, the Penguin Project is a
musical theater program that pairs neurodiverse learners with a
peer mentor who serves as their guide and partner throughout the
production; these students with exceptionalities are able to
showcase their abilities and passion in a supportive environment,
and mentors develop invaluable leadership and empathy skills while
gaining experience in community service; by creating meaningful,
inclusive opportunities for them to fully participate in the arts,
the program celebrates and empowers neurodiverse children; and
WHEREAS, A collaborative effort, the project also includes
parents, families, and teachers in every aspect of the production,
from costume and set design to emotional and logistical support
during rehearsals; in addition, the program has seen a nearly 100
percent retention rate of students returning for multiple seasons;
and
WHEREAS, True to its mission, the Penguin Project has helped
to build confidence, friendships, and a sense of belonging for many
young Texans, and it is indeed deserving of this prestigious honor;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas
Legislature hereby congratulate the Southwest Independent School
District Penguin Project on receiving a 2025 Magna Silver Award
from the National School Boards Association and extend to all those
involved in the program sincere best wishes for the future; and, be
it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for the program as an expression of high regard by the
Texas House of Representatives.
