SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 467

WHEREAS, For 75 years, Alvin Community College has been an

invaluable educational resource to residents of Brazoria County

and beyond; and

WHEREAS, Established on November 2, 1948, as part of Alvin

High School, Alvin Community College began its inaugural school

year the following September with a class of 134; in order to meet

the growing needs of its students, the college moved to a

separate facility, and it eventually relocated to its current

campus in 1963; having separated from the Alvin Independent

School District in 1971, the Alvin Junior College District nearly

doubled its service area a few years later and continued to

expand with the founding of the Pearland Center in 1998; and

WHEREAS, Today, ACC boasts a student body of over 5,000 and

more than 50 degree and certificate programs, including those in

a wide range of allied health and industrial fields; the college

also offers dual-credit courses, and each year, over 200 students

graduate from high school with an associate's degree through ACC;

moreover, the college maintains articulation agreements with a

number of universities to allow students to transition directly

into bachelor's degree programs, and it was the first Texas

community college to create a law enforcement training academy

and to educate inmates in the Texas Department of Criminal

Justice; and

WHEREAS, ACC has received a number of accolades, including

a Lifetime Achievement in Business Award from the Alvin-Manvel

Area Chamber of Commerce, and it was named a Hispanic-Serving

Institution by the U.S. Department of Education; and

WHEREAS, Alvin Community College has served as a gateway to

opportunity for generations of Texans over the past

three-quarters of a century, and it is fitting that the

institution's faculty, staff, and students be celebrated on this

important milestone; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th

Legislature, hereby commemorate the 75th anniversary of Alvin

Community College and extend to all those associated with the

college sincere best wishes for continued success.
