SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 585

WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to

join Texans across the State in celebrating May 27, 2025, as

Western Swing Day; and

WHEREAS, The official state music of Texas, western swing

was popularized at Fort Worth's Crystal Springs Dance Hall in the

early 1930s by musicians Bob Wills and Milton Brown; their

energizing performances blended rhythms from a diverse range of

musical traditions and cultures and offered dancing music and a

lively reprieve for Texans and their communities bearing the

burdens of the Great Depression; and

WHEREAS, Western swing bands characteristically feature

the fiddle, rhythm guitar, and upright bass, and many larger

performance groups also incorporate the stylings of steel and

electric guitars, pianos, drums, horns, electric mandolins, and

tenor banjos; and

WHEREAS, This joyful and uplifting music genre has

captivated audiences of all ages and backgrounds and joins people

together in the enduring spirit of dance, community, and

celebration; Wills, Brown, and other similar artists pioneered a

new style of musical performance nearly a century ago that has

continued to inspire legendary Texas musicians and preserve

widely beloved traditions in our state; and

WHEREAS, Western Swing Day offers an opportunity for

Texans throughout the state to appreciate and enjoy this iconic

musical genre, and it is truly fitting that a day be set aside to

celebrate this beloved and quintessential Texas music and to

honor its unique and important role in the history and culture of

the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th

Legislature, hereby recognize western swing as a treasured part

of our state's heritage and recognize May 27, 2025, as Western

Swing Day; and, be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in

honor of this special occasion.
