SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 590

In Memory

of

Janis Stanwood Meinscher

WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and

commemorates the life of Janis Stanwood Meinscher, a beloved

member of the Capitol community, who died on August 15, 2024, at

the age of 72; and

WHEREAS, Jan Stanwood was born on March 10, 1952, to Joseph

Stanwood and Gladys Coleman Stanwood; she possessed a feisty

courage and strong sense of adventure from an early age, and

after completing high school she enrolled at Texas State

University; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Meinscher's noteworthy career at the State

Capitol spanned more than three decades, and her valuable service

in both chambers included serving the offices of Senator Kent

Caperton, the Senate Journal, Senate Parliamentarian Walter

Fisher, and House Parliamentarians Denise Davis and Chris

Griesel; a devotee of the legislative process, she dedicated her

considerable energies to keeping things running smoothly; during

regular and special sessions, her responsibilities required many

arduous late nights, but she always returned early the next

morning to start her day with a speed walk through the Capitol

Extension; and

WHEREAS, Jan's engaging smile and her wisecracks helped

lighten the load for her colleagues, and she was a mentor to

countless staffers and a friend and confidant to many

legislators; above all, she adored her family, and she shared a

rewarding marriage with her late husband, Denis, and took great

pride in her daughter, her stepdaughter, and her grandchildren;

now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th

Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the life of Janis Stanwood

Meinscher and extend sincere condolences to her family: to her

daughter, Emily Edington; to her stepdaughter, Heather O'Brien,

and her husband, Steve; to her grandchildren, Shelbi Malatin,

Aubrey Edington Jones, and Austin Edington Jones; to her brother,

Danny Stanwood, and his wife, Missy; and to her many friends and

relatives; and, be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for

her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas

Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in

memory of Jan Meinscher.
