SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 630

In Memory

of

James Doty Jr.

WHEREAS, The life of an esteemed military veteran drew to a

close with the passing of Brigadier General (Ret.) James Henry

Doty Jr. on July 12, 2023, at the age of 61; and

WHEREAS, The son of James Doty Sr. and Mary Owens, Jim Doty

was born in Pittsburg, Kansas, on October 10, 1961, and he grew up

with the companionship of four younger siblings, Merle, Kandy,

Sherrie, and Rocky; answering his nation's call to duty, he

joined the Army National Guard at the age of 18; he obtained a

bachelor's degree in history from the University of the State of

New York and a master's degree in strategic studies from the

United States Army War College; his military education also

included officer courses as well as the U.S. Army Command and

General Staff College; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Doty was commissioned in the U.S. Army as a

field artillery and engineer officer; over the course of his

career, he held numerous leadership positions at military

installations across the United States, and he served at the

Pentagon three separate times, including when it was attacked on

9/11; he was promoted to brigadier general in 2009, and he was

appointed senior commander of the 4th Infantry Division at Fort

Carson in Colorado; the proudest moment of his tenure was when

his star was pinned to his uniform; he eventually retired

following 33 years of exemplary service in the armed forces; and

WHEREAS, General Doty's military honors included the

Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Meritorious

Service Award with one silver oak leaf cluster, Army Commendation

Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Army Achievement Medal, Army

Reserve Components Achievement Medal, and Army Staff

Identification Badge; during his retirement, he became the

commander of Chapter 61 of the Disabled American Veterans in

Seguin; and

WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, General Doty enjoyed the

love and support of his wife, Charlotte, with whom he shared a

rewarding marriage that spanned more than four decades; he was

the devoted father of three children, Kandy and Brooke Doty, who

preceded him in death, and Blake Doty, and he also took great

pride in Mrs. Doty's three sons, Shawn, Jason, and Chris Mallory,

whom he raised as his own; over the years, he saw his treasured

family grow to include seven grandchildren, Makala, Nikolaus,

Reece, Aarika, Zachary, Isabella, and the late Joshua Mallory;

and

WHEREAS, Jim Doty lived a rich and purposeful life, and he

leaves behind a record of service that his loved ones can

remember with pride; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th

Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the memory of Brigadier

General (Ret.) James Henry Doty Jr. and extend heartfelt sympathy

to his family and many friends; and, be it further

RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be

prepared for his family and that when the Texas Senate adjourns

this day, it do so in memory of Jim Doty.
