SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 678

WHEREAS, The members of Buchanan First Baptist Church of

Texarkana celebrated the 100th anniversary of their church's

founding on March 30, 2025; and

WHEREAS, One of the oldest churches in Bowie County,

Buchanan First Baptist Church traces its origins to 1925, when a

group of 14 charter members gathered in a private home to

organize a new church; the congregation originally worshiped out

of a one-room sanctuary, which subsequently underwent a number of

additions and renovations and was relocated to South Lake Drive

in 1947; the membership held the first services in the current

church building on Buchanan Loop Road in August 1995; in order to

meet the needs of the growing congregation, a family life and

education center were added nearly a decade later; and

WHEREAS, Since its organization, Buchanan First Baptist

Church has benefited from the dedicated efforts of many outstanding

members of the clergy, including Pastor Rick Rothwell, who has led

the congregation for the past four years; and

WHEREAS, United by their shared faith and strong

traditions, the members of this notable house of worship have

established a variety of commendable programs that foster

fellowship and offer help to those in need, including ministries

for men, women, youth, and the elderly; and

WHEREAS, Countless residents of the Texarkana area have

looked to Buchanan First Baptist Church for spiritual guidance

over the years, and it is a pleasure to join in honoring the

church at this special time in its rich history; now, therefore,

be it

RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th

Legislature, hereby commemorate the 100th anniversary of

Buchanan First Baptist Church in Texarkana and extend to its

members sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further

RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be

prepared for the church as an expression of high regard from the

Texas Senate.
