SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 701

In Memory

of

James Hanlon

WHEREAS, Family and friends will forever cherish their

memories of James Edward Hanlon of Tyler, who passed away on

April 4, 2025, at the age of 91; and

WHEREAS, The son of Leroy and Helen Hanlon, Jim Hanlon was

born in Brooklyn, New York, on June 30, 1933, and he grew up with

the companionship of his brother, John; after graduating from

high school, he worked for the Guaranty Trust Company of

Manhattan, New York, before attending St. John's University;

while there, he answered his nation's call to duty and served as a

military policeman during the Korean War; he subsequently

returned to St. John's and completed his degree; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Hanlon embarked on a career in business with

the Columbia Broadcast System, and he held a position with WBBM

Radio in Chicago for several years; in 1967, he assumed a new role

as controller of the New York Yankees Baseball Club, and he went

on to serve as vice president of Viacom Inc. and as president of

Suffolk Cablevision before accepting an offer from Buford Cable

Television in Tyler to operate and expand the company's cable

television nationwide operations; in 1981, he created his own

cable television company, MCT Cablevision Inc., and after it was

sold to Northland Cable Television, he served as regional vice

president of its Texas locations; he later opened a Berkshire

Hathaway real estate franchise in Tyler as a broker before his

retirement; and

WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, Mr. Hanlon benefited from

the love and support of his wife, Joyce, with whom he shared a

rewarding marriage that spanned 54 years until her passing; he

took great pride in his children, Mark, Cathy, and Timothy, and

he had the privilege of seeing his family grow to include six

grandchildren, James, Ryan, Caitlin, Joseph, Emma, and Cole; in

his leisure time, he enjoyed playing golf, fishing, painting, and

going on family vacations; he also liked attending Texas A&M

football games, and he was an avid fan of the New York Yankees and

the Texas Rangers; a man of strong faith, he was an active member

of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, where he served

the congregation as an usher for many years; and

WHEREAS, Although Jim Hanlon is greatly missed, he has left

his family and friends with many cherished memories, and he will

forever hold a special place in their hearts; now, therefore, be

it

RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th

Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the memory of James Edward

Hanlon and extend heartfelt sympathy to all who mourn his

passing; and, be it further

RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be

prepared for his family and that when the Texas Senate adjourns

this day, it do so in memory of Jim Hanlon.
