Plain English Breakdown

The requirement for school buses to be painted yellow and equipped with warning devices is already part of existing law, not a new addition by this bill.

Rules for Passing a Stopped School Bus

This act changes Virginia's law to clarify when drivers do not need to stop for a school bus that is stopped on the opposite side of a divided highway, access road, or driveway if there is a physical barrier or unpaved area between them.

What This Bill Does

  • Clarifies that drivers don't have to stop for a school bus if it's on the opposite side of a divided highway and separated by a physical barrier like a wall or an unpaved area.
  • States this rule applies even if the barrier is not continuous, but has breaks for intersections or turning vehicles.
  • Explains that the same rules apply for access roads and driveways with similar barriers separating them from where the driver is.

Who It Names or Affects

  • Drivers of motor vehicles
  • School bus drivers

Terms To Know

divided highway
A road with a median or barrier separating lanes going in opposite directions.
access road
A smaller road that connects to a larger road, often used for entering and exiting highways.

Limits and Unknowns

  • The bill does not specify the exact dimensions or types of physical barriers.
  • It doesn't mention how this change will be enforced or communicated to drivers.
