WHEREAS, the George Wythe High School boys' basketball team capped off the 2024–2025 season with a victory in the Virginia High School League Class 1 state championship; and
WHEREAS, the George Wythe High School Maroons finished the regular season as Mountain Empire District champions and subsequently won the district and regional tournaments; and
WHEREAS, in the state tournament, the George Wythe Maroons defeated a talented team from Patrick Henry High School in the semifinal by a score of 82–54, to advance to the Class 1 state final in Richmond on March 14, 2025; and
WHEREAS, the George Wythe Maroons soundly defeated the Franklin High School Broncos by a score of 77–38 to claim the state crown and finish the season with a 27–4 overall record; and
WHEREAS, the successful season was a tribute to the skill and hard work of all the student-athletes, Cayden Bement, Micah Braxton, Rex Delp, David Goode, Shane Huff, Kaden Irby, Reed Kirtner, Holden Luttrell, Brayden Rainey, Treyvon Rainey, T.J. Reddick, and Zeshawn Thomas; and
WHEREAS, the George Wythe Maroons benefited from the leadership and guidance of the coaches Tony Dunford, Dan Delp, Dorrien McMillian, Daveon Rhyans, and Jermany Robinson, and managers C.J. Dickenson, Marcus Leagans, Dannon Windon, and Cannon Woods, as well as the passionate support of friends, family members, and the entire Wytheville community; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the George Wythe High School boys' basketball team on winning the Virginia High School League Class 1 state championship in 2025; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Tony Dunford, head coach of the George Wythe High School boys' basketball team, as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for the team's achievements and best wishes for the future.
