WHEREAS, in 2026, Glasgow Middle School, an outstanding intermediate school in Fairfax County, celebrated the 65th anniversary of its official opening in 1961; and
WHEREAS, Glasgow Middle School traces its origins to the late 1950s, when Fairfax County Public Schools voted to establish its first intermediate schools and the newly constructed Parklawn Elementary School was selected as a pilot school, teaching only students in seventh and eighth grades; and
WHEREAS, the pilot program was so successful that Fairfax County Public Schools implemented a plan to open eight more intermediate schools, the first of which was Glasgow Intermediate School; and
WHEREAS, Glasgow Intermediate School was named for Ellen Glasgow, a Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist from Richmond who supported the women's suffrage movement; and
WHEREAS, Glasgow Intermediate School was organized in 1959, but with its new building still under construction, held its first classes at Parklawn Elementary School and Falls Church High School; and
WHEREAS, Glasgow Intermediate School officially opened at its permanent location in the spring of 1961 and adopted its current name, Glasgow Middle School, in the 1990s; and
WHEREAS, over the course of its history, Glasgow Middle School has developed a community of lifelong learners who are active, knowledgeable, and caring; and
WHEREAS, the faculty and staff members of Glasgow Middle School have helped young people achieve new levels of academic heights and grow to become responsible, respectful global citizens who strive to create a more peaceful world through intercultural understanding; and
WHEREAS, Glasgow Middle School offers innovative programs, personal and group interventions, and networks of parent and community support to help students succeed to their highest level of ability and prepare them for success in high school studies, higher education, and careers; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Glasgow Middle School on the occasion of its 65th anniversary; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Glasgow Middle School as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for the school's legacy of achievements in service to the Fairfax County community.
