Agreed to by the House of Delegates, February 23, 2026
WHEREAS, Elmer H. Steffes, an accomplished dairy farmer, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, and revered member of the Mount Calvary, Wisconsin, community, died on January 9, 2026; and
WHEREAS, Elmer Steffes devoted himself to dairy farming, working long hours throughout the year to care for his animals and provide for his family; and
WHEREAS, alongside his wife, Betty, Elmer Steffes raised eight children, instilling in them the value of hard work so that they would grow up to achieve success in their lives; and
WHEREAS, Elmer Steffes was a skilled and passionate woodworker who produced a great number of children's rocking chairs and other furniture out of his family's sawmill; and
WHEREAS, in addition to woodworking, Elmer Steffes savored every opportunity to fish and deer hunt, and he was happiest of all when spending quality time with his family and loved ones, including his 22 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; and
WHEREAS, with his quick humor, big-hearted personality, and mischievous grin, Elmer Steffes endeared himself to all who knew him; and
WHEREAS, preceded in death by his wife, Betty, Elmer Steffes will be fondly remembered and dearly missed by his children, Dan, Kathy, Karen, Kris, Kim, the Honorable Amy J. Laufer, Gary, and Thomas, and their families and by numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of Elmer H. Steffes, a dedicated dairy farmer from Mount Calvary, Wisconsin, who brought joy to countless lives; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Elmer H. Steffes as an expression of the House of Delegates' respect for his memory.
