Commending the Fairfax Stars basketball program.
Agreed to by the House of Delegates, March 2, 2026
WHEREAS, the Fairfax Stars basketball program was founded in 1996 to provide an additional opportunity for boys and girls to participate in Amateur Athletic Union travel basketball while emphasizing community values, mentorship, and opportunity; and
WHEREAS, the Fairfax Stars began competing at the local, regional, and national levels of Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) basketball in 1997 and have since earned a reputation for excellence in player development and competitive achievement; and
WHEREAS, the Fairfax Stars operate as a community-based, volunteer-driven, nonprofit organization headquartered in Fairfax County; and
WHEREAS, student-athletes from across the Commonwealth, including Hampton, Richmond, Winchester, Fredericksburg, and Northern Virginia, have competed with the Fairfax Stars and achieved success both on and off the court; and
WHEREAS, the Fairfax Stars provide year-round programming in a safe, organized, and supervised environment, including regular seasons, summer leagues, tournaments, camps, clinics, training, and charitable initiatives such as the annual THINK PINK girls' tournament promoting breast cancer awareness and research; and
WHEREAS, the Fairfax Stars have established a national record of excellence, including eight AAU Girls National Championships and five additional national championships, while continuing to teach and mentor young student-athletes in the skills, discipline, and teamwork necessary for success; and
WHEREAS, more than 400 Fairfax Stars student-athletes have earned the opportunity to pursue higher education through athletic scholarships, and 13 former players have been drafted into the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA), including Jasmine Thomas, a four-time Northern Region Player of the Year, Oakton High School graduate, Duke University alumna, and 13-season WNBA veteran, with many additional alumni playing professionally overseas and in other professional sports; and
WHEREAS, 2026 marks the 30th anniversary of the Fairfax Stars basketball program under the continued leadership of founder and executive director Aggie McCormick; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That the Fairfax Stars basketball program hereby be commended on the occasion of its 30th anniversary for its enduring commitment to youth development, educational opportunity, and community enrichment across Fairfax County and the Commonwealth; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Fairfax Stars basketball program as an expression of the House of Delegates' admiration and appreciation for its three decades of service.
