Commending Sedley Baptist Church.
Agreed to by the House of Delegates, March 9, 2026
WHEREAS, in 2025, Sedley Baptist Church in Southampton County celebrated the 100th anniversary of helping its congregation grow in faith, while providing generous outreach and spiritual leadership to the wider community; and
WHEREAS, Sedley Baptist Church was developed through the leadership of the Reverend C.L. Eubank and the Reverend R.P. Welch, who understood the need for a new Baptist church to serve the Sedley community; and
WHEREAS, with support from Black Creek Baptist Church, Grace Memorial Methodist Church, and the Sedley Friends Meeting, Sedley Baptist Church was established on October 12, 1925, with 30 charter members; and
WHEREAS, Sedley Baptist Church held its first services in borrowed spaces until 1929, when the congregation purchased and renovated an old hotel to serve as a sanctuary; in 1950, the congregation demolished the hotel to make way for the construction of the current building; and
WHEREAS, as Sedley Baptist Church continued to prosper, the congregation opened a fellowship hall in 1968, completed an addition to the hall and installed stained glass windows in 1986, and remodeled parts of the church in 2004; and
WHEREAS, since that time, Sedley Baptist Church has continued to expand to better meet the needs of its congregation and the community; in addition to regular worship services, the church maintains a nursery program, Sunday school classes, evening prayers, monthly suppers, and ministries for children, teens, men, and women; and
WHEREAS, Sedley Baptist Church represents the unwavering faith and tireless commitment to servant leadership of the Baptist community in Sedley; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Sedley Baptist Church hereby be commended on the occasion of its 100th anniversary in 2025; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Sedley Baptist Church as an expression of the House of Delegates' admiration for the church's long history of contributions to the Sedley community.
