WHEREAS, Sophie Rambo, a senior and member of the track and field team at Grassfield High School in Chesapeake, set a national high school record in the 500-meter event during the Virginia Showcase at the Virginia Beach Sports Center on January 16, 2026; and
WHEREAS, racing in the girls' invitational 500-meter event, Sophie Rambo achieved a time of 1:10.07, eclipsing Athing Mu's previous record of 1:10.22 that had stood since 2020; and
WHEREAS, Sophie Rambo's extraordinary performance makes her the 26th fastest American all-time in the 500-meter event; and
WHEREAS, originally a softball player, Sophie Rambo began competing in track in eighth grade and quickly excelled, posting times that placed her among seniors by her freshman year and that ranked her first in the nation in the 500-meter event by her junior year; and
WHEREAS, Sophie Rambo, who already holds nine individual state titles and has helped lead the Grassfield High School track and field team to two Virginia High School League Class 6 state championships, looks to add to her impressive tally in the spring; and
WHEREAS, track and field fans in the Commonwealth and beyond are eager to watch Sophie Rambo's star continue to rise as she takes her talents to the University of Georgia in the fall and sets her sights on competing in future Olympic Games; and
WHEREAS, Sophie Rambo is a member of the National Honor Society and her school's multicultural club and maintains a 3.75 grade point average while giving generously of her time to support the community through food drives and other local endeavors; and
WHEREAS, Sophie Rambo's remarkable accomplishments are the product of her hard work, determination, and skill, the leadership and guidance of her coaches and trainers, and the unwavering support of her family and the entire Grassfield High School community; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Sophie Rambo hereby be commended for setting a national high school record in the 500-meter event; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Sophie Rambo as an expression of the House of Delegates' admiration for her achievements and best wishes for her continued success.
