Agreed to by the House of Delegates, March 9, 2026
WHEREAS, the Rural Retreat High School wrestling team won the Virginia High School League Class 1 state championship on February 21, 2026, at the Salem Civic Center; and
WHEREAS, the Rural Retreat High School Indians posted a score of 216 points to top the runner-up Grundy High School Golden Wave by 23.5 points, bringing home the program's fifth state championship title; and
WHEREAS, the Rural Retreat Indians were carried to victory at the state meet by the strong performances of its wrestlers, three of whom were individual champions and eight of whom placed in the competition; and
WHEREAS, during the 2025–2026 regular season, the Rural Retreat Indians went 15–0 in dual matches while placing first at both the Bobby Bates Wrestling Classic and the Jeff Peal Memorial Tournament and third at the Rural Retreat Invitational; and
WHEREAS, the Rural Retreat Indians' state championship win was a fitting conclusion for the team's senior class, which went 63–2 in dual meets over their high school career; and
WHEREAS, the accomplishments of the Rural Retreat Indians are the result of the hard work and dedication of the student-athletes, the leadership and guidance of their coaches and teachers, and the unwavering support of their families and the entire Rural Retreat High School community; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That the Rural Retreat High School wrestling team hereby be commended for winning the 2026 Virginia High School League Class 1 state championship; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Cade Rouse, coach of the Rural Retreat High School wrestling team, as an expression of the House of Delegates' admiration for the team's achievement and best wishes for the program's continued success.
