Celebrating the life of Lawrence Toliver, Sr.
Agreed to by the House of Delegates, March 10, 2026
WHEREAS, Lawrence Toliver, Sr., an honorable veteran, loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, and beloved member of the Fincastle community, died on December 11, 2025; and
WHEREAS, after graduating from the former Academy Hill School in Fincastle, Lawrence Toliver enlisted with the United States Army and served the country with honor and distinction over a combined six years of both active and reserve duty as an electric generator motor repairman; and
WHEREAS, during his military career, Lawrence Toliver completed his basic training at Fort Belvoir, was deployed to France, and quickly rose through the ranks from private to E-4 as a result of his leadership and conduct; and
WHEREAS, following his service, Lawrence Toliver served as a manager of a Howard Johnson's Restaurant for many years, working tirelessly to ensure the enjoyment and satisfaction of his customers, while also generously supporting and mentoring his employees in myriad ways; and
WHEREAS, Lawrence Toliver's greatest joy in life was spending quality time with family and loved ones, and he devoted himself to documenting every moment and milestone for the benefit of future generations; and
WHEREAS, guided throughout his life by his faith, Lawrence Toliver was a member of Lapsley Run Baptist Church in Fincastle in his early years, and he enjoyed worship and fellowship with his community and served as deacon at First Baptist Church of Amsterdam in Daleville, both before and after it merged with another church to become Spirit of Unity Baptist Church in Cloverdale; and
WHEREAS, Lawrence Toliver will be fondly remembered and dearly missed by his wife of 60 years, Jean; his children, Vincent, Lawrence, Jr., Michael, Elton, Gene, and Tanya, and their families; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of Lawrence Toliver, Sr., a treasured member of the Fincastle community whose compassion, kindness, and generosity touched countless lives; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Lawrence Toliver, Sr., as an expression of the House of Delegates' respect for his memory.
