Celebrating the life of Charles Ray Obaugh, Jr.
Agreed to by the House of Delegates, February 2, 2026
WHEREAS, Charles Ray Obaugh, Jr., a respected entrepreneur who founded what is now the Charlie Obaugh Auto Group and an active community member in and around Staunton, died on September 30, 2025; and
WHEREAS, Charles “Charlie” Ray Obaugh, Jr., was born in Staunton and graduated from Wilson Memorial High School in nearby Fishersville; he was a Boy Scout in his youth and earned the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout, demonstrating his early commitment to leadership and community service; and
WHEREAS, Charlie Obaugh continued his education at The College of William & Mary, then served his country as a member of the United States Air Force; and
WHEREAS, after his honorable discharge, Charlie Obaugh began his career in the automotive industry at Hays Chevrolet in Staunton, then worked at his uncle's dealership, Obaugh Ford, until 1975, when he formed his own dealership, Charlie Obaugh Pontiac Buick GMC; and
WHEREAS, Charlie Obaugh worked with his son, Eric, to grow the business into the Charlie Obaugh Auto Group, which now encompasses multiple dealerships; he was highly admired for his commitment to excellence and dedication to his employees; and
WHEREAS, in recognition of his achievements, Charlie Obaugh was selected as the
TIME
Quality Dealer of the Year for Virginia in 2008; and
WHEREAS, Charlie Obaugh enjoyed fellowship and worship with the community as a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Staunton, and he volunteered his wisdom and insights to a number of worthy organizations, including the Augusta Regional SPCA, the Boys & Girls Club of Waynesboro, Staunton, and Augusta County, and the 4H/FFA Market Animal Show and Sale; and
WHEREAS, Charlie Obaugh will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife, Valerie; his son, Eric, and his family; his stepchildren, Laura and Matthew, and their families; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of Charles Ray Obaugh, Jr., a leader in the automotive industry and a highly admired member of the Staunton community; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Charles Ray Obaugh, Jr., as an expression of the House of Delegates' respect for his memory.
