Celebrating the life of Mabel Jones Smith.
Agreed to by the House of Delegates, March 13, 2026
WHEREAS, Mabel Jones Smith, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother and active and beloved member of the Charles City County community, died on April 2, 2025; and
WHEREAS, Mabel Smith attended the former Ruthville High School in Charles City County and was a member of an extension agent home cooking, sewing, and gardening club; and
WHEREAS, Mabel Smith supported her community in her younger years as a member of her local civic league and branch of the NAACP; and
WHEREAS, Mabel Smith dedicated herself to helping families in need over the years both through her profession and through various endeavors in the Parrish Hill community; and
WHEREAS, Mabel Smith found immense joy in cultivating her flower garden and was happiest of all when spending quality time with family and loved ones; and
WHEREAS, guided throughout her life by her faith, Mabel Smith enjoyed worship and fellowship with her community at Parrish Hill Baptist Church in Charles City County for more than 70 years and served in the church's senior choir and in various other capacities; and
WHEREAS, preceded in death by her loving husband, Hermon, Sr., Mabel Smith will be fondly remembered and dearly missed by her children, Maxine, Hermon, Jr., Laverne, and Yvonne, and their families and by numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of Mabel Jones Smith, a treasured member of the Charles City County community whose light brightened countless lives; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Mabel Jones Smith as an expression of the House of Delegates' respect for her memory.
