Agreed to by the House of Delegates, February 9, 2026
WHEREAS, on October 11, 2025, the Volvo Group subsidiary Volvo Trucks North America presented an all-new Volvo VNL 860, the company's flagship sleeper truck, to the American Revolution 250 Commission, the Commonwealth's official body to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution, the Revolutionary War, and the independence of the United States; and
WHEREAS, the Volvo Group's New River Valley plant in Dublin opened under the White Motor Corporation in 1975 as an assembly plant producing 20 trucks per day; last year, the plant and its employees celebrated 50 years of truck manufacturing in the New River Valley; and
WHEREAS, the New River Valley plant has been owned and operated by the Volvo Group since 1981 and has grown into a fully integrated factory handling welding, painting, and final assembly for all Volvo trucks in North America, as well as welding and painting of cabs for the company's sister brand, Mack Trucks; and
WHEREAS, with more than 3,600 employees at the New River Valley plant, the Volvo Group is the largest private employer in the region, and the corporation has invested more than $760 million in the Commonwealth since 2011; and
WHEREAS, the Volvo Group's investments in the Commonwealth include $500 million to prepare the New River Valley plant for the production of a completely reimagined Volvo VNL, which represents Volvo's single largest investment to expand existing operations and makes the plant the largest Volvo truck manufacturing facility in the world, with 2.3 million square feet of manufacturing space; and
WHEREAS, the Volvo Group has supported a thriving workforce by actively recruiting interns and graduates from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and Radford University, while also inspiring middle and high school students to pursue careers in advanced manufacturing through forums and outreach; and
WHEREAS, as a result of the success of the Volvo Group, today, many expatriates from around the world call the New River Valley home; and
WHEREAS, the Volvo Group and its employees have enhanced the quality of life in the New River Valley by sponsoring middle and high school students participating in the FIRST Tech Challenge and by launching the Volvo New River Valley Community Fund in 2024; and
WHEREAS, the Volvo Group is loaning its fully equipped truck to the American Revolution 250 Commission to tow the commission's mobile museum, “Out of Many, One,” a traveling exhibit that celebrates the Commonwealth's unparalleled role in the history of the American Revolution and the founding of the United States of America; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That the Volvo Group hereby be commended for the loan of its Volvo VNL 860 to the American Revolution 250 Commission; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Volvo Group as an expression of the House of Delegates' admiration for the corporation's contributions to the New River Valley and the Commonwealth.
