Celebrating the life of August Bryant Bullock.

WHEREAS, August Bryant Bullock, an esteemed educator and education administrator, distinguished supporter of theater and the arts, and an active and beloved member of the Newport News community, died on October 6, 2025; and
WHEREAS, known by many as “Augie,” August Bullock graduated from the former George Washington Carver High School in Newport News in 1970 before earning a bachelor's degree in education with cum laude honors from Virginia Union University in 1974 and a master's degree in elementary administration and supervision from Hampton University in 1977; he also held a certificate of advanced graduate studies from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University; and
WHEREAS, August Bullock devoted more than 40 years to school divisions in the Commonwealth, contributing to the success of young people both in and out of the classroom as a teacher for 11 years and by leading schools in his capacity as a principal, assistant principal, curriculum supervisor, and associate superintendent; and
WHEREAS, inspired by his experiences in his high school drama club, August Bullock became a lifelong thespian who would go on to make meaningful contributions to the American regional theater movement, including by serving as director of new works with the District of Columbia Black Theater Festival and through his involvement with the Pacific Northwest Multicultural Readers Series and Film Festival in Portland, Oregon, and the International Black Theatre Festival in Winston-Salem, North Carolina; and
WHEREAS, August Bullock gave generously of his time for the benefit of the community through his service on a number of boards, commissions, and committees, including the Hampton Roads Transit Board of Commissioners and several initiatives of Newport News Public Schools; and
WHEREAS, a life member of the NAACP, August Bullock served as chair of the Education Committee of the Newport News Branch of the NAACP; and
WHEREAS, August Bullock received many honors for his impact on education, the arts, and the community, including the Virginia Transit Association's Outstanding Contribution by an Individual Award and the Virginia Union University Alumni Association's 40 for 40 award; and
WHEREAS, guided throughout his life by his faith, August Bullock enjoyed worship and fellowship with his community at First Baptist Church in Newport News, where he was recently elected to serve as a trustee; and
WHEREAS, August Bullock will be fondly remembered and dearly missed by his nieces, Cynthia, Deborah, and Monique; his nephews, Derek, Kenneth, Errol, David, and Travis; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of August Bryant Bullock, a treasured member of the Newport News community whose light brightened countless lives; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of August Bryant Bullock as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory.
