WHEREAS, Patricia Y. King, M.D., a distinguished physician and public servant, was named the Chesapeake Woman of the Year by the Women's Division of the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce Chesapeake in 2025; and
WHEREAS, born and raised in Norfolk, Patricia King graduated from Booker T. Washington High School before earning a bachelor's degree in chemistry and mathematics from Howard University; and
WHEREAS, after serving for some time as a junior high school teacher in mathematics and science, Patricia King embarked upon her career in medicine, earning a medical degree from Meharry Medical College and completing her internship in internal medicine and a residency program in psychiatry and neurology at Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS); and
WHEREAS, Patricia King has served the Hampton Roads community in private practice since 1993 and has owned and operated her own private practice in Chesapeake since 1996; and
WHEREAS, beyond her private practice, Patricia King has led several hospitals as medical director, represented pharmaceutical companies and other organizations as a national and local speaker, served on numerous boards, founded community outreach organizations, and advocated for various mental health, health care, and education initiatives; and
WHEREAS, Patricia King has guided and supported future physicians as a member of the Board of Trustees of EVMS, as an advisor to students preparing for interviews for residency programs, as a keynote speaker for EVMS's incoming medical class in 2019, and as the founder of a nonprofit organization, Hearts 4 Progress, Inc., that provides scholarships to medical students in need; and
WHEREAS, Patricia King has held leadership positions with various local community organizations including the Norfolk chapter of The Links, Inc., the Friends of Hampton Roads, the Rotary Club of Chesapeake, the Women's Division of the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce Chesapeake, and the Hurrah Players in Norfolk; and
WHEREAS, Patricia King's dedication to her community led her to pursue public service, and she was elected to the Chesapeake School Board in 2018 and to the Chesapeake City Council in 2024; and
WHEREAS, Patricia King has received numerous honors in recognition of her impact, including awards from Old Dominion University and EVMS, as well as multiple “Top Doc” recognitions in Hampton Roads Magazine; and
WHEREAS, through her unwavering commitment to the health and well-being of others, including the most vulnerable and underserved members of the community, Patricia King has earned the esteem and admiration of all Virginians; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Patricia Y. King, M.D., for being named the 2025 Chesapeake Woman of the Year by the Women's Division of the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce Chesapeake; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Patricia Y. King, M.D., as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for her contributions to the Commonwealth.
