WHEREAS, Norman Grayden Lineburg, an honorable veteran, esteemed educator and coach, and beloved member of the Radford community, died on July 17, 2025; and
WHEREAS, after graduating from John Handley High School in Winchester in 1954, Norman Lineburg earned a bachelor's degree from what is today Shepherd University, where he played four years of football and was team captain, then earned a master's degree in English from the University of Virginia; he also served his country with honor and distinction as a member of the United States Army; and
WHEREAS, Norman Lineburg embarked upon a long and distinguished career as an educator and coach in 1959 at Andrew Lewis High School in Salem and subsequently worked at William Byrd High School in Vinton and the former Fieldale-Collinsville High School in Henry County before becoming the head football and track and field coach at Radford High School; and
WHEREAS, Norman Lineburg went on to lead the Radford High School Bobcats for 38 years, guiding his teams to two football state championships and four track and field state championships and becoming one of the winningest coaches in the history of the Virginia High School League (VHSL); and
WHEREAS, Norman Lineburg embraced his role as coach and athletic director with remarkable vigor and enthusiasm, regularly playing alongside his student-athletes as he imparted lessons that would serve them both on the field and in life; and
WHEREAS, in recognition of his accomplishments, Norman Lineburg was inducted into the VHSL Hall of Fame in 1997, as well as the John Handley High School Hunter Maddox Hall of Fame; and
WHEREAS, preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Joann, Norman Lineburg will be fondly remembered and dearly missed by his children, Robert, Mark, Paul, and Wayne, and their families; and by numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Norman Grayden Lineburg, a revered member of the Radford community whose dedication and service made a positive and lasting impact on countless lives; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Norman Grayden Lineburg as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory.
