WHEREAS, Sharon P. Scott, an esteemed public servant who served as the North District representative on the Newport News City Council from 2002 to 2022, has admirably supported her community with great dedication and vision; and
WHEREAS, as a city council member, Sharon Scott advocated for transparency and engagement by holding regular town hall meetings to keep citizens informed and involved in local government; and
WHEREAS, Sharon Scott founded and coordinated an annual North District food drive beginning in 2002, aiding families in need and rallying support to promote the well-being of others; and
WHEREAS, Sharon Scott served as a passionate advocate for citizens and for local participation in government on various issues ranging from transportation to senior services; and
WHEREAS, beyond her leadership on the Newport News City Council, Sharon Scott has served with several regional commissions and organizations, including the Peninsula Airport Commission, the Transportation District Commission of Hampton Roads, the Hampton Roads Regional Jail Authority, Sister Cities of Newport News, Inc., and a number of community development committees, strengthening cooperation across the region; and
WHEREAS, Sharon Scott has received numerous awards in recognition of her service and impact as a leader of her community, including the NAACP Living Legend award, the YWCA Women of Distinction award, and the American Legion Leadership Award; and
WHEREAS, with integrity, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to the citizens she served, Sharon Scott has helped to make Newport News a wonderful place to live, work, and raise a family; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Sharon P. Scott for her legacy of service on the Newport News City Council and in her community; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Sharon P. Scott as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for her contributions to Newport News and the Commonwealth.
