WHEREAS, Lou Sorrentino, a distinguished educator and coach who most recently led the Mountain View High School football team of Stafford County for the past 15 seasons, retired in 2025; and
WHEREAS, Lou Sorrentino embarked upon his teaching and coaching career at George Mason High School in Falls Church, where he transformed a struggling program and notched two winning seasons and a playoff appearance in two years; and
WHEREAS, Lou Sorrentino next arrived at Culpeper County High School, which had not won a regional title in football since 1941; he led the program to an 84–29 record over ten seasons and won the Virginia High School League (VHSL) Division 5 state title in 1999 with a perfect 14–0 record; and
WHEREAS, Lou Sorrentino took over a strong program at C.D. Hylton High School in Woodbridge and led the team for eight seasons, achieving an impressive 70–24 record, along with a VHSL Division 6 state title in 2002 and five playoff appearances; and
WHEREAS, when Lou Sorrentino took the reins at Mountain View High School in 2010, the football team had gone 13–37 in the first five years the school was open; he quickly turned the program around, building it into one of the leading contenders in Region 6B of the VHSL; and
WHEREAS, after his 15 seasons with the Mountain View Wildcats, Lou Sorrentino's record with the team was 108–65, which included a stretch from 2019 to 2023 when the program went 47–12 and reached four straight regional finals; and
WHEREAS, in recognition of his accomplishments over his 35-year coaching career, which included two state championships and a 274–127 all-time record, Lou Sorrentino was inducted into the Virginia High School League Hall of Fame; and
WHEREAS, beyond the gridiron, Lou Sorrentino has dedicated himself to nurturing the success and well-being of countless young people as a history teacher for 43 years; and
WHEREAS, in his capacities as a coach and educator, Lou Sorrentino made a positive and lasting impact on countless young people, leaving a legacy of excellence, dedication, and service that will inspire others for years to come; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Lou Sorrentino, an esteemed coach and educator at Mountain View High School, on the occasion of his retirement; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Lou Sorrentino as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for his contributions to the Commonwealth.
