Celebrating the life of Everette Alexander Hicks, Sr.

WHEREAS, Everette Alexander Hicks, Sr., an honorable veteran, esteemed educator, distinguished public servant, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, and cherished member of the Newport News community, died on May 31, 2025; and
WHEREAS, Everette “Teddy” Hicks graduated from the historic George Washington Carver High School in Hampton Roads before joining the United States Army and serving his country with honor and distinction in both the United States and Korea; and
WHEREAS, following his service, Teddy Hicks earned a bachelor's degree in 1961 from what is today Norfolk State University and then a master's degree from what would become Hampton University; and
WHEREAS, Teddy Hicks devoted 32 years to the education of young people as a teacher, coach, and administrator with Newport News Public Schools, including at Carver High School, the former Ferguson High School, Point Option, and Menchville High School; and
WHEREAS, in his retirement, Teddy Hicks redoubled his commitment to his community's young people by serving on the Newport News School Board from 2000 to 2016, including terms as vice-chairman and chairman; and
WHEREAS, Teddy Hicks made an impact on the lives of others as a lifetime member of the Newport News branch of the NAACP and as a member of the C. Waldo Scott Center trustee board, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Hampton Roads board of directors, and the Virginia Educators Credit Union board of directors; and
WHEREAS, Teddy Hicks was guided throughout his life by his faith and was a devoted member of Ivy Baptist Church in Newport News, where he served as chairman of the deacon board and trustee, as well as in other leadership capacities; and
WHEREAS, preceded in death by his wife of 42 years, Lucille, Teddy Hicks will be fondly remembered and dearly missed by his loving son, Everette, Jr., and his family; and by numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Everette Alexander Hicks, Sr., a treasured member of the Newport News community whose service and dedication touched countless lives; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Everette Alexander Hicks, Sr., as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory.
