WHEREAS, the George Wythe High School girls' basketball team capped off the 2024–2025 season with a victory in the Virginia High School League Class 1 state championship; and
WHEREAS, the George Wythe High School Maroons finished the regular season as the Mountain Empire District champions and subsequently won the district and regional championships; and
WHEREAS, advancing to the state tournament, the George Wythe Maroons defeated a talented team from Honaker High School in the semifinal by a score of 34–31, then moved on to the Class 1 final in Richmond on March 14, 2025; and
WHEREAS, the George Wythe Maroons defeated the Buffalo Gap High School Bison by a score of 50–44 to earn the state crown and finish the season with a 27–3 record; and
WHEREAS, the victorious season was a tribute to the skill and dedication of all the student-athletes: Abby Berry, Baylee Campbell, Avery Cline, Destiny Davis, Emma Faulkner, Caroline Harris, Makaylan Luttrell, Alana Malavolti, Madalyn Morris, and Kailey Mullins; and
WHEREAS, the George Wythe Maroons benefited from the able leadership of coaches Doug Campbell, Linda Brinkley, Tyler Cannoy, Lance Grubb, Malik Johnson, and managers Cannen Campbell and Josiah Collins, as well as the passionate support of friends, family members, and the entire Wytheville community; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the George Wythe High School girls' basketball team on winning the Virginia High School League Class 1 state championship in 2025; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Doug Campbell, head coach of the George Wythe High School girls' basketball team, as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for the team's achievements and best wishes for the future.
