WHEREAS, Pat B. Huber, Ph.D., an esteemed higher education administrator who has served as president of New River Community College for the past seven years, retired in December 2024; and
WHEREAS, Pat Huber earned a bachelor's degree in English from Emory and Henry College in 1976, then served as a high school educator in Smyth and Wythe Counties while earning a master's degree at West Virginia University; she would also go on to earn a doctoral degree in community college leadership from Old Dominion University in 2006; and
WHEREAS, beginning in 1987, Pat Huber taught both full-time at Pulaski County High School and part-time at New River Community College (NRCC) through the school's dual enrollment and evening programs; and
WHEREAS, Pat Huber went on to devote 25 years to NRCC, serving as dean of arts and sciences then as vice president for instruction and student services from 2007 to 2017 before becoming president that year; and
WHEREAS, Pat Huber is the sixth president in the history of New River Community College and notably its first female president; and
WHEREAS, during her tenure as president of NRCC, Pat Huber expanded eligibility for the Access to Community College Education (ACCE) program to the entire New River Valley region, enabling more high school graduates in the area to qualify for up to two years of tuition through volunteer service; and
WHEREAS, as a result of Pat Huber's leadership, the ACCE program has helped more than 1,600 students receive college credits, and these students have also contributed more than 175,000 hours of community service through their work in the program; and
WHEREAS, Pat Huber has embodied the ideals of education leadership during her tenure at NRCC and helped to make the New River Valley region a wonderful place to live, work, and learn; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate of Virginia, That Pat B. Huber, Ph.D., hereby be commended on the occasion of her retirement from New River Community College; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Pat B. Huber, Ph.D., as an expression of the Senate of Virginia's admiration for her contributions to the New River Valley region and the Commonwealth.
