WHEREAS, the James S. Russell Middle School girls' basketball team won the Southside Middle School Conference tournament championship on February 17, 2026, in Lawrenceville; and
WHEREAS, the James S. Russell Middle School Lions defeated the Mecklenburg Middle School Phoenix by a score of 26–20 to secure the championship title and finish the season undefeated with a record of 15–0; and
WHEREAS, the Russell Lions took a 20–11 lead into halftime and held strong in the second half to seal the win; and
WHEREAS, the Russell Lions were led to victory by Caniyah Easter, who had 10 points, and LaKayla Hill, who had nine; and
WHEREAS, the accomplishments of the Russell Lions are the result of the hard work and dedication of the student-athletes, the leadership and guidance of their coaches and teachers, and the unwavering support of their families and the entire James S. Russell Middle School community; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate of Virginia, That the James S. Russell Middle School girls' basketball team hereby be commended for winning the 2026 Southside Middle School Conference tournament championship; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the James S. Russell Middle School girls' basketball team as an expression of the Senate of Virginia's admiration for the team's achievement and best wishes for the program's continued success.
