Agreed to by the Senate, March 13, 2026
WHEREAS, Bryant Stith is a native of the Freeman community in Brunswick County who has reached the highest echelons of basketball as both a player and coach; and
WHEREAS, Bryant Stith was a standout on the University of Virginia (UVA) basketball team, earning 1989 Atlantic Coast Conference Rookie of the Year honors and finishing his collegiate career as UVA's all-time leading scorer with 2,516 points; and
WHEREAS, Bryant Stith was selected 13th overall in the 1992 National Basketball Association (NBA) draft by the Denver Nuggets, whom he played with for eight seasons; he also played for the Boston Celtics and the Cleveland Cavaliers before retiring in 2002, completing his NBA career with 5,946 points and 1,178 assists; and
WHEREAS, following his professional basketball career, Bryant Stith led the Brunswick High School boys' basketball team to three straight state championship titles and posted an impressive 185–23 record over his seven seasons as the program's head coach; and
WHEREAS, Bryant Stith next served from 2013 to 2022 as the assistant coach at Old Dominion University, where he nurtured the development of his players, including his sons, Brandan and B.J., while helping to establish the team as one of the most dominant basketball programs in Conference USA; and
WHEREAS, Bryant Stith has recently served as assistant coach and is currently the interim head coach of the University of North Carolina Greensboro's men's basketball team, where he continues to build upon his extraordinary legacy as a coach; and
WHEREAS, as a result of his hard work, dedication, and commitment to excellence, Bryant Stith has enjoyed a remarkable basketball career at both the collegiate and professional levels, and brought great pride to the Commonwealth; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate of Virginia, That Bryant Stith hereby be commended for his accomplishments over his long and impressive basketball career; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Bryant Stith as an expression of the Senate of Virginia's admiration for his achievements and best wishes for his continued success.
