Celebrating the life of Rilda Jolene Brewer Evans.
Agreed to by the Senate, February 5, 2026
WHEREAS, Rilda Jolene Brewer Evans, a beloved member of the Woodlawn community who brought joy to others through her kindness and heartfelt generosity, died on June 23, 2025; and
WHEREAS, Rilda “Penny” Evans was born in Wythe County in 1933 and began to cultivate her commitment to family and dedication to service from a young age; and
WHEREAS, Penny Evans was employed at several textile companies over the years, including Hanes and the Sara Lee Corporation, where she was highly admired for her work ethic, careful craftsmanship, and attention to detail; and
WHEREAS, Penny Evans joined Snow Hill Baptist Church in Galax in 1945 and enjoyed fellowship and worship with the congregation until the time of her passing; she expressed her abiding faith through her devotion to prayer and her selfless, compassionate actions; and
WHEREAS, Penny Evans enjoyed tending to her garden, canning, cooking, and baking, especially homemade cakes and pies; she was well known in the community for raising the spirits of sick or homebound neighbors through gifts of her delicious baked goods; and
WHEREAS, predeceased by her husband, Walter, Penny Evans will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by her son, Willis, and his family; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of Virginia hereby note with great sadness the loss of Rilda Jolene Brewer Evans, a highly admired resident of Woodlawn; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Rilda Jolene Brewer Evans as an expression of the Senate of Virginia's respect for her memory.
