Celebrating the life of Robert Scott Jones.
Agreed to by the Senate, February 12, 2026
WHEREAS, Robert Scott Jones, a construction company owner who has served the Commonwealth by completing hundreds of road, rail, and utility projects and a beloved husband, father, and grandfather in Abingdon, died on June 24, 2025; and
WHEREAS, a native of Abingdon, Robert “Bob” Jones and his family moved to Lee County after his father accepted a new position as an engineer with the Virginia Department of Transportation; and
WHEREAS, Bob Jones attended the former Jonesville High School, where he played football all four years and was honored as All-State Defensive Player of the Year; he received an athletic scholarship to East Tennessee State University and continued playing football while earning his bachelor's degree in business administration; and
WHEREAS, Bob Jones began his career working on small construction projects in the 1970s, then opened his own construction firm, R.S. Jones & Associates, Inc., in 1984; and
WHEREAS, three years later, Bob Jones and his wife, Carol, established Boring Contractors, Inc., now known as Jones Road & Bridge, to provide civil construction, excavation, and pipe boring services throughout Southwest Virginia; and
WHEREAS, Bob Jones guided all aspects of Jones Road & Bridge, from project estimation and management to equipment purchases; his visionary leadership helped the business to achieve great success, and he strengthened the Commonwealth's infrastructure through his hundreds of projects under the Virginia Department of Transportation; and
WHEREAS, Bob Jones served and supported his peers in the field of civil construction by helping to organize the Old Dominion Highway Contractors Association and serving as president of the organization; and
WHEREAS, Bob Jones enjoyed fellowship and worship with the congregation of Pleasant View Global Methodist Church in Abingdon; and
WHEREAS, outside of his career, Bob Jones enjoyed hunting, fishing, farming, and attending auctions; his greatest joy in life was spending time with his beloved family, especially at the annual Jones family reunion; and
WHEREAS, Bob Jones will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his beloved wife of 52 years, Carol; his children, Elizabeth and Turner, and their families; and numerous other family members, friends, and colleagues; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of Virginia hereby note with great sadness the loss of Robert Scott Jones, a respected entrepreneur and a highly admired member of his community in Southwest Virginia; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Robert Scott Jones as an expression of the Senate of Virginia's respect for his memory.
