Celebrating the life of Walter Luther Young, Jr.
Agreed to by the Senate, March 5, 2026
WHEREAS, Walter Luther Young, Jr., a champion for the farming community in southeastern Virginia and a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, died on January 30, 2026; and
WHEREAS, Walter Young grew up on his family's dairy farm and worked in agriculture throughout his life, raising dairy cattle, beef cattle, hogs, and row crops; and
WHEREAS, Walter Young was an active leader in the community who represented his fellow residents as a member of the Southampton County Board of Supervisors and provided his insights and expertise to the Southampton County Fair Board; and
WHEREAS, Walter Young was also a founder and lifelong supporter of 4-H and proudly watched his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren participate in 4-H programs over the years; and
WHEREAS, Walter Young enjoyed fellowship and worship with the congregation of Sycamore Baptist Church in Franklin, where he served as a Sunday school teacher, deacon, and trustee; he mentored young people through the youth and children's ministry and expressed his joyful faith through his love of contemporary Christian music; and
WHEREAS, Walter Young relished every opportunity to make lasting memories with family members and friends, and he was known for his ability to trace his family history back through generations, sharing countless tales about his ancestors; and
WHEREAS, Walter Young will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife of 65 years, Betty Sue; his children, Walt, Susan, Holly, and Chris, and their families; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of Virginia hereby note with great sadness the loss of Walter Luther Young, Jr., a highly admired farmer and community leader in Southampton County; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Walter Luther Young, Jr., as an expression of the Senate of Virginia's respect for his memory.
