AN ACT Relating to the availability of rabies medication for 1
postexposure prophylaxis; and adding a new section to chapter 70.41 2
RCW. 3
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON:4
NEW SECTION. Sec. 1. A new section is added to chapter 70.41 5
RCW to read as follows: 6
Beginning January 1, 2027, every hospital that operates an 7
emergency department shall maintain a supply of rabies medication for 8
postexposure prophylaxis to allow for a first dose to be provided, as 9
medically indicated, upon arrival at the emergency department. The 10
hospital shall arrange for the additional doses necessary to complete 11
the patient's course of treatment either by maintaining a stock of 12
the rabies medication for postexposure prophylaxis on the premises or 13
by making alternative arrangements to have the rabies medication 14
available in a timely manner. 15
