WHEREAS, Blaine Memorial United Methodist Church, originally 1
established as the Seattle Japanese Methodist Episcopal Church on 2
January 28, 1904, has faithfully served its members and the broader 3
community for 120 years; and 4
WHEREAS, The church began as a Japanese language ministry to 5
Japanese immigrants, with its Issei members developing and nurturing 6
an English language division for subsequent generations; and7
WHEREAS, The church has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to 8
spiritual growth, community service, and social justice throughout 9
its history; and 10
WHEREAS, Blaine Memorial United Methodist Church provided 11
critical support to Japanese immigrants arriving in our state, 12
offering temporary housing, job information, English classes, and 13
other essential services; and 14
WHEREAS, The church actively opposed anti-Japanese discrimination 15
through education, legal strategies, and community outreach, and 16
served as a place of support and community during the forced 17
incarceration of Japanese Americans during World War II; and18
WHEREAS, The church has adapted and innovated through the 19
decades, continuing its mission through the Great Depression, World 20
War II, and the COVID-19 pandemic; and 21
WHEREAS, The church has been a welcoming and inclusive community, 22
committed to serving all in love; 23

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives 1
hereby recognize and celebrate the 120th anniversary of Blaine 2
Memorial United Methodist Church; and 3
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives express 4
our deep gratitude for the church's continuing work to build a 5
welcoming and inclusive community where all are accepted and 6
celebrated. 7
