WHEREAS, The first creamery in Washington was started in Cheney 1
in 1880; and 2
WHEREAS, Washington's dairy industry is actually older than the 3
state itself; and 4
WHEREAS, Cows were first brought to Washington in 1838; and5
WHEREAS, Dairy farms can be found in 27 of Washington's 39 6
counties; and 7
WHEREAS, There are 33 certified organic dairies in Washington; 8
and 9
WHEREAS, Families across Washington have depended on the safe and 10
nutritious dairy products provided by the dairy farmers of Washington 11
state for generations; and 12
WHEREAS, Dairy is an essential part of a healthy diet, is one of 13
the major food groups represented on the United States department of 14
agriculture's "MyPlate" dietary guidelines, and three cups of dairy 15
products per day are recommended for people nine years old and older; 16
and 17
WHEREAS, There are nearly 260 family dairy farms in Washington 18
state with approximately 257,000 dairy cows; and 19
WHEREAS, Dairy ranks as the second highest agricultural commodity 20
produced in Washington, with economic impact valued over one billion 21
dollars; and 22

WHEREAS, Washington is the 10th largest total milk producer among 1
the fifty United States; and 2
WHEREAS, Dairy Day at the legislature takes place on February 11, 3
2025, when legislators will visit with Washington dairy producers and 4
enjoy delicious dairy products that are produced in Washington;5
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives 6
acknowledge and honor the women and men whose work on dairy farms 7
throughout Washington has contributed much to the strength and 8
vitality of our economy, the character of our communities, and the 9
general well-being of our citizens. 10
