WHEREAS, An estimated 54 million Americans have osteoporosis or 1
low bone mass, and studies suggest that approximately one in two 2
women and up to one in four men aged 50 and older will break a bone 3
due to osteoporosis; and 4
WHEREAS, Osteoporosis-related bone fractures account for more 5
hospitalizations than heart attacks, strokes, or breast cancer; and6
WHEREAS, Osteoporosis is often referred to as a "silent disease" 7
because individuals cannot feel their bones weakening; and8
WHEREAS, Timely bone health screening, diagnosis, and treatment 9
can help prevent fractures that may lead to hospitalizations and 10
long-term nursing home stays; and 11
WHEREAS, Cost-effective postfracture care, which improves care 12
coordination, has been shown to reduce the number of subsequent or 13
repeat fractures; and 14
WHEREAS, Osteoporosis and the associated broken bones are not an 15
inevitable part of aging — building strong bones begins in childhood 16
and remains essential throughout life, with peak bone mass typically 17
reached by early adulthood; and 18
WHEREAS, Optimum bone health and osteoporosis prevention can be 19
achieved through a balanced diet rich in calcium and vitamin D, 20
weight-bearing and muscle-strengthening exercises, and a healthy 21
lifestyle free from smoking and excessive alcohol consumption; and22

WHEREAS, Raising awareness about bone health among the public, 1
health care professionals, and policymakers is vital to reducing the 2
prevalence and impact of osteoporosis; 3
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives 4
recognize and appreciate the ideals, goals, and activities of 5
National Bone Health and Osteoporosis Month in May; and6
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives 7
encourage the observation of appropriate health programs and 8
activities to promote bone health and the prevention of osteoporosis 9
throughout life. 10
