WHEREAS, Profound autism is a subtype of autism spectrum disorder 1
(ASD), characterized by a severe intellectual disability and 2
significant difficulties with communication; and 3
WHEREAS, While the entire spectrum deserves recognition and 4
support, profound autism is a term intended to provide clarification 5
about autistic people who require 24/7 care throughout their lives; 6
and 7
WHEREAS, According to the Centers for Disease Control and 8
Prevention, 1 in 36 children in the United States are diagnosed with 9
ASD, and approximately 1 in 4 children diagnosed with ASD have 10
profound autism; and 11
WHEREAS, Profound autism is often a disorder with significant 12
unmet patient needs; and 13
WHEREAS, Individuals with profound autism often face unique 14
challenges, including higher rates of self-injurious behaviors, 15
seizure disorders, and lower adaptive functioning, necessitating 16
specialized services and interventions; and 17
WHEREAS, People with profound autism consistently experience 18
unique and often unseen challenges that require solutions, not only 19
for them but for their caregivers; and 20
WHEREAS, Public campaigns to highlight profound autism provide an 21
opportunity to increase awareness and further educate the public 22

about autism and to promote understanding, acceptance, and support 1
for individuals with profound autism and their families;2
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Washington State House 3
of Representatives commend those serving and supporting individuals 4
with profound autism as they convene on March 17, 2025, to highlight 5
and educate others about profound autism and encourage Washingtonians 6
to learn more about profound autism. 7
