WHEREAS, Julia Butler Hansen was born June 14, 1907, and her 1
family home, the Julia Butler Hansen House, is the oldest surviving 2
pioneer structure in Wahkiakum County; and 3
WHEREAS, The Julia Butler Hansen House is unique in its 4
significance to the pioneer history of early Washington Territory and 5
is a "treasure house" of objects and heirlooms of regional and 6
national significance drawn from the distinguished career of 7
Congresswoman Julia Butler Hansen; and 8
WHEREAS, Julia Butler Hansen was the first woman in history to 9
chair a Congressional Appropriations Subcommittee and was the close 10
protégé of presidents including Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon 11
Johnson; and 12
WHEREAS, Congresswoman Hansen was a legendary transportation 13
leader, instrumentally involved in catalyzing some of the most 14
significant infrastructure in the Pacific Northwest, including the 15
Astoria-Megler Bridge, along with many other historic firsts; and16
WHEREAS, Congresswoman Hansen rose from the Cathlamet Town 17
Council to embark on a 21-year career in the Washington State House 18
of Representatives, serving the 18th Legislative District from 1939 19
to 1960, followed by a 14-year career in the U.S. Congress, serving 20
the 3rd Congressional District from 1960 to 1974, including 21
distinguished service on the Washington State Highways Commission and 22
successors; and 23

WHEREAS, The Julia Butler Hansen House is unique not only for its 1
historic character but also its inventory of irreplaceable objects 2
reflective of Julia Butler Hansen's lengthy public career, including 3
photos, telegrams, letters and tributes from U.S. Presidents, 4
Governors, Senators and other well-known public figures with whom 5
Julia interacted at the highest levels of state and federal 6
government throughout her career; 7
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Washington State House 8
of Representatives honor the life and legacy of Congresswoman Julia 9
Butler Hansen. 10
