WHEREAS, Washington has a storied history of supporting refugees 1
seeking a safe place to land, acting as a sanctuary for many fleeing 2
their homes due to war, violence, oppression, and discrimination; and3
WHEREAS, Leading with compassion and empathy has made Washington 4
state a welcoming place for thousands of refugees to land and 5
establish residence, adding to the rich diversity of Washington and 6
fostering a community that celebrates inclusion; and7
WHEREAS, Following the conclusion of the Vietnam War, thousands 8
of Vietnamese immigrants were welcomed to and settled in Washington, 9
setting the precedent for thousands of other refugee groups to seek 10
refuge in Washington state; and 11
WHEREAS, Approximately 16,000 Ukrainians continue to seek refuge 12
in Washington from the ongoing violence since the Russian invasion of 13
Ukraine in 2022; and 14
WHEREAS, Washington's refugee communities add to the rich 15
tapestry of voices and identities that enrich our communities and 16
make Washington a culturally vibrant and diverse state; and17
WHEREAS, Everett, Washington is home to the only refugee 18
welcoming center in the state, with many refugees arriving with 19
little more than the clothes on their backs; 20
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives 21
recognize the important role Washington's refugee communities play in 22
HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 2025-4642 , by Representatives Thai, Parshley, Leavitt,
Callan, Pollet, Santos, Nance, Cortes, Ryu, Bergquist, Zahn, Donaghy, Stonier,
Walen, Kloba, Salahuddin, Gregerson, Paul, Reed, and Thomas
