WHEREAS, Ayşenur Ezgi Eygi was born in Turkey on July 27, 1998, 1
but was raised in Seattle, Washington where she attended West Seattle 2
High School as well as the Ida B. Wells School for Social Justice, an 3
alternative Seattle Public Schools college preparatory program at the 4
University of Washington campus; and 5
WHEREAS, Eygi possessed a profound sense of peace and justice 6
which cultivated her enduring personal commitment to social and 7
environmental activism as a tireless community leader who organized 8
peaceful protests including a 2016 mass student walkout against 9
xenophobia and for religious freedom in Seattle, who stood in 10
solidarity with indigenous, displaced, and marginalized communities 11
across the country, who spent time supporting the elderly and 12
individuals with disabilities, and who worked as a behavioral 13
technician to serve children on the autism spectrum and their 14
families; and 15
WHEREAS, Eygi was equally enthusiastic and energetic about 16
engaging in global movements for peace and sustainability, devoting 17
herself to the mutual advancement of climate justice and human rights 18
through her understanding of the interdependence of healthy 19
ecosystems and thriving societies whether supporting physical therapy 20
and eco building projects in Myanmar, participating in coral reef 21
restoration in Australia, or transforming recycled plastics into 22
usable fuel in Indonesia; and 23

WHEREAS, Eygi ardently advocated against human displacement in 1
the United States and internationally, supporting refugees and 2
immigrants who resettled in Seattle by assisting with administrative 3
paperwork, finding housing, as well as securing food and other basic 4
human needs, and volunteering to serve as a human rights observer in 5
embattled regions of the globe; and 6
WHEREAS, Eygi graduated from the School of Psychology at the 7
University of Washington in June 2024 with plans to pursue a Ph.D. in 8
anthropology and with dreams to serve American immigrant communities 9
through original research and with clinical counseling, but on 10
September 6, 2024, her dreams and her life were tragically cut short 11
by a sniper bullet as she bore witness to events unfolding in the 12
Middle East; and 13
WHEREAS, In honor of Ayşenur Ezgi Eygi as a human rights 14
advocate, community organizer, and university alumna, the University 15
of Washington Middle East Center established a public lecture series 16
in her name to foster public education, dialogue, and civic 17
engagement on issues of international human rights, global peace, and 18
environmental sustainability; 19
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives 20
posthumously recognize the extraordinary life of Ayşenur Ezgi Eygi 21
and commend her legacy of activism which continues to inspire other 22
Washingtonians to fight for social and environmental justice and to 23
work for a more equitable, sustainable world; and 24
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be 25
immediately transmitted by the Chief Clerk of the House of 26
Representatives to the family of Ayşenur Ezgi Eygi.27
