WHEREAS, Today, we join together in the state of Washington and 1
across the nation to commemorate, honor, and remember the life of 2
Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.; and 3
WHEREAS, Dr. King was born on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta, 4
Georgia, and graduated from Morehouse College in 1948 at just 5
nineteen years old and received his doctorate from Boston University 6
in 1955; and 7
WHEREAS, Dr. King dedicated his life to the pursuit of equality, 8
justice, and economic opportunity; and 9
WHEREAS, He was beaten, terrorized, and imprisoned for his work, 10
but responded to these grave injustices and hatred with love, hope, 11
peace, and a vision of a better tomorrow instead of allowing hate to 12
fester even greater; and 13
WHEREAS, In his famous letter from the Birmingham jail, he gave 14
the entire nation a call to action where he stated, "I have earnestly 15
worked and preached against violent tension, but there is a type of 16
constructive nonviolent tension that is necessary for growth"; and17
WHEREAS, Citizens, protestors, and organizations still use his 18
model of nonviolent civil disobedience to enact change, recalling his 19
words "hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that"; and20
WHEREAS, Dr. King propelled the ugly truths of segregation and 21
racial injustice to the forefront of American conversation at dinner 22

and fulfilling the promise of a democracy for every American; and2
WHEREAS, The Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act 3
of 1965 became law thanks to the sacrifices of Dr. King and his 4
supporters; and 5
WHEREAS, Dr. King was the youngest person ever to receive the 6
Nobel Peace prize in 1964, in recognition of his faith, work, and 7
dedication to the cause of human equality; and 8
WHEREAS, Despite his assassination on April 4, 1968, his legacy 9
of love, peace, compassion, and faith endures today; and10
WHEREAS, Dr. King's life work is continually celebrated through a 11
permanent federal holiday and was posthumously honored with the 12
presidential Medal of Freedom and the congressional Gold Medal; and13
WHEREAS, The work of Dr. King is unfinished, as his petition for 14
equality and justice have not been met for all citizens of America; 15
and 16
WHEREAS, We remember the unwavering commitment, determination, 17
and perseverance Dr. King had towards the ideals of equality and 18
opportunity for all, even against oppression, corruption, and tyranny 19
from those in power. 20
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives 21
recognize the importance of the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. 22
and exemplify his work through embracing the sentiments of equality, 23
justice, and opportunity for all. 24
