WHEREAS, The State of Washington supported the creation of 1
Western Governors University (WGU) in 1998 to provide access to 2
affordable education and training opportunities through online, 3
competency-based programs and pledged, along with 18 other member 4
states of Western Governors Association, to take appropriate actions 5
to create policies that support the goals of WGU; and6
WHEREAS, Fifteen years ago this spring, the State of Washington 7
established an innovative partnership with WGU to create WGU 8
Washington, a first-of-its-kind legislative initiative dedicated to 9
expanding access to affordable higher education for Washington 10
residents through tech-enabled innovation and student-centered 11
design; and 12
WHEREAS, WGU Washington provides high-quality, affordable, and 13
career-aligned degree programs in sectors vital to our state's 14
prosperity, equipping the nurses, educators, business leaders, and 15
technology professionals essential for Washington to thrive in a 16
competitive global marketplace; and 17
WHEREAS, WGU Washington serves as a primary driver toward 18
Washington's educational attainment goal of at least 70 percent of 19
Washington adults aged 25 to 44 achieving a postsecondary credential; 20
and 21
WHEREAS, WGU Washington has achieved remarkable success in 22
serving Washington's adult learners and underserved populations, 23

including our veteran community, by providing high-quality, 1
affordable pathways to degree completion, expanding options for 2
transfer students, and directly addressing the state's most critical 3
workforce needs; and 4
WHEREAS, The impact of this partnership is evidenced by its 5
extraordinary growth, with enrollment surging from 850 students at 6
its inception to more than 13,000 today; and 7
WHEREAS, This collaboration has produced nearly 50,000 graduates, 8
establishing The Evergreen State as home to the third-highest 9
concentration of WGU students and alumni in the nation; and10
WHEREAS, WGU Washington remains committed to helping 11
Washingtonians achieve their dreams of attaining a credential or 12
degree and career success, and ensuring The Evergreen State remains a 13
great place to live, work, and raise families; 14
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Washington State House 15
of Representatives congratulates Western Governors University on its 16
15th anniversary in serving the students of Washington State.17
